Greece has a total of 443 regions belonging to the European network Natura, covering 27.1% of the country's area.
Greece has one of the largest and most important networks of protected areas across Europe. This is the Natura 2000 network, which in Greece comprises 241 Sites of Community Importance and 202 Special Protection Areas for birds and wildlife.
Greece also has 11 national parks, two large water parks, 10 wetlands of international importance protected by the Ramsar Convention, 19 aesthetic forests and many monuments of great environmental value and cultural heritage.
The Natura 2000 is a pan-European network for the protection of all species and biodiversity, established in May 1992. It is one of the most ambitious European projects for the protection of nature and the expression of European policy for protection of the environment.
By joining the Natura network, the region automatically acquires European legal protection. Constructions are prohibited and only buildings related to the environment are allowed. Also, the establishment of large industries is prohibited. There are restrictions in the use of pesticides and livestock farms. The regions which enter the Natura network acquire a European identity and international recognition.
